Former Southwestern University President Durwood Fleming Remembered
This week, the Southwestern University community was informed of the death of
Durwood Fleming, Southwestern University's 12th President, who served from 1961 to 1981. Fleming passed away Monday, Jan. 22, after a lengthy illness.
President Jake B. Schrum ’68 remembers Daddy Dur by offering, "Durwood Fleming's impact on Southwestern has been enormous. His insistence on combining superb academics with value-centered education and his far-reaching personal relationships, especially with Southwestern friends in Houston, continue to influence and support the way the University views its role in society and pursues its core purposes. History will smile on his positive life and his significant legacy. Southwestern owes him a deep sense of gratitude." Memorial services will be Saturday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas and also Monday, Jan. 29, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Houston, where he served as pastor from 1945 to 1961. Southwestern will hold a service in Fleming's honor at a time to be arranged with the family. At the family's request, memorials may be made to any cause or institution -- the purpose of which is to challenge and minister to the human spirit; inform the minds of children and youth, and to alleviate human suffering wherever it is found -- listing St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Southwestern University, The Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University and The Methodist Hospital of Houston.
Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family in care of:

Southwestern and Dillard University Sign Partnership Agreement
Southwestern University has signed a partnership agreement with Dillard University that will enable the two to pursue collaborative initiatives in several areas, including institutional management, diversity education and other academic efforts. The agreement formalizes a partnership that has already been in place for several years. In December 2005, Southwestern sponsored a program to help faculty members from Dillard recreate course materials lost in Hurricane Katrina and develop new online courses that could be offered to students regardless of their location. Southwestern and Dillard also are participating in a collaborative leadership and student exchange project funded by the Mellon Foundation. This program also includes Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Morehouse College in Atlanta and Rhodes College in Memphis. Creating formal alliances with historically black colleges and universities is one of the goals in Southwestern's Strategic Plan for 2010.

Theatre Department Performs Company
The Southwestern University Theatre Department invites you to attend Company, a musical comedy. An honest, witty, sophisticated look at relationships, Company offers a fresh perspective on our most cherished institution, marriage – its troubles and triumphs, its viciousness and victories. Performances are scheduled for Feb. 23-March 4, in the Jesse and Mary Gibbs Jones Theatre of The Alma Thomas Fine Arts Center. Friday and Saturday performances will begin at 8 p.m., while Sunday performances will begin at 3 p.m. When tickets are available, you may purchase them online.
Brown Symposium XXIX: Who Do We Think We Are?!
What are humans in relationship to the many other animals with whom we share the Earth? Religious and philosophical traditions alike have addressed this question in myriad ways and arrived at countless answers. Scientists and ethicists continually grapple with this problem as our choices and actions contribute to the extinction of species after species. While we often live in harmony with other animals, we also experiment on them, mass produce them for food, use them for entertainment and encroach on their habitats. We live constrained by the deep-seeded foundational dualism - “us” and “them” - that we are human and they are animals. But we are all animals, inexorably interconnected. So this symposium (re)asks, “Who Do We Think We Are?!”
Open to the public without charge, the Brown Symposium XXIX is scheduled for March 5-6, 2007. Featured speakers include Paul Waldau, Inés Talamantez, Alice Walker and Marc Bekoff. Click here to view the schedule. Register online! A reception for alumni will be held in conjunction with the art exhibition Monday, March 5, at 6 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery of The Alma Thomas Fine Arts Building. The 29th Symposium in the series,“Who Do We Think We Are?!,” has been developed by Laura Hobgood-Oster, associate professor of religion, chair of the Religion and Philosophy Department and holder of the Elizabeth Root Paden Chair in Religion. The Symposium is funded through an endowment established by The Brown Foundation, Inc., of Houston.
