HAPPENINGS: Annual Giving Update With less than a month to go before the end of SU's fiscal year, Annual Fund gifts have topped $1 million with the help of hundreds of alumni. One very generous alumna, Mrs. Genevieve Britt Caldwell '42 of Amarillo, gave $50,000 to help the University reach its goal of $1,151,000 for the Annual Fund.
Student callers raised $195,555, pledged from 2,502 alumni and parent households, an 18% increase in dollars pledged and a 9% increase in the number of pledges.
Senior Fund volunteers spearheaded a very successful senior gift campaign. 70% of the senior class made gifts to fund a scholarship for a first-year student next year, easily breaking the previous record of 52%.
Alumni participation (not including pledges) for the year stands at 28%. Your gift can still be counted! To show your support by making an on-line gift, click here.
A Successful Season for SU Spring Sports The Pirate baseball team finished the season with a 40-11 record and a sixth consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament. The year was also notable for Head Coach Jim Mallon's 1100th win in a 24-3 victory over Hendrix College on April 21.
The SU women's golf team placed third in the nine-team field, and the men placed eighth. During the fall season, the Pirates were runners up at the Rolex Golf World Match Play Championships as they played against the defending and eventual national champions.
The 2001 SCAC Championships marked the end of the season for both women's and men's tennis. The Southwestern women's tennis team finished in fifth place, an improvement over last year's finish. The men completed the year with a win over Centre to take seventh in Conference. Visit the SU athletics page for more information.
